You Don’t Have to Turn Everything Into Progress
Somewhere along the way, we learned to measure almost everything.
How productive our mornings are.
How many books we read.
How many steps we take.
How much water we drink.
How quickly we reach a goal.
How much better we are becoming.
Even the things that once belonged simply to pleasure have slowly found their way onto our lists of things to improve.
We read to become more knowledgeable.
We exercise to change our bodies.
We journal to become more self-aware.
We organize our homes to become more productive.
We turn hobbies into side projects, interests into skills, and sometimes even rest into something we need to do correctly.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to grow.
Growth can be beautiful.
There is something deeply meaningful about looking at your life and realizing that you want to care for it, learn from it, and become more intentional about the way you live.
But perhaps not everything needs to take us somewhere.
Maybe some things are allowed to exist in our lives simply because they bring us joy.
Some Things Can Be Just Because
You can read a book and forget half of it.
You can plant flowers without knowing their names.
You can take a walk without counting your steps.
You can cook something slowly even when there is a faster way.
You can paint badly.
You can sing without having a beautiful voice.
You can spend an afternoon in the garden without calling it mindfulness.
You can watch the sky change colors without taking a photograph.
You can begin something without wondering whether you could eventually become good at it.
Not everything we love needs to become another place where we evaluate ourselves.
Some things can simply belong to us.
No goals attached.
No improvement required.
No proof that the time was well spent.
When Joy Becomes Another Task
It is surprisingly easy to turn even the gentlest parts of life into another form of pressure.
A morning routine becomes a checklist.
A hobby becomes something we feel guilty for neglecting.
A peaceful evening becomes an opportunity to “reset.”
Even self-care can begin to feel like another responsibility we are somehow falling behind on.
And perhaps that is when we need to remember that our lives are not projects waiting to be completed.
We are allowed to experience them while they are still unfinished.
There will always be something we could improve.
Another habit to build.
Another room to organize.
Another goal to reach.
Another version of ourselves we could imagine becoming.
But if every moment is used only to prepare for the person we hope to be someday, we may forget to spend time with the person who is already here.
A Life Doesn’t Need to Be Optimized to Be Meaningful
There are moments whose value cannot really be measured.
Sitting at the kitchen table longer than necessary because the conversation is good.
Watching a butterfly move between the flowers.
Playing the same song again because you are not ready for it to end.
Making something with your hands that nobody else will ever see.
Laughing with someone when you should probably be doing something more “productive.”
Standing outside for a few extra minutes because the evening feels beautiful.
None of these moments move a plan forward.
And yet, somehow, they move us.
Maybe that is enough.
Let Something Be Useless
Perhaps every now and then, we need something in our lives that serves absolutely no purpose beyond making us happy.
A garden that will never be perfect.
A notebook filled with thoughts nobody will read.
A recipe that takes too long.
A collection of little things we simply love.
A hobby we have no intention of mastering.
An afternoon that produces nothing.
There is a quiet kind of freedom in doing something without asking what it will give us in return.
Because joy does not always need to become growth.
Rest does not need to make us more productive tomorrow.
Creativity does not need an audience.
And time does not have to produce something in order to have been worth living.
You Are Allowed to Simply Live
Of course, keep dreaming.
Make your plans. Build beautiful things. Learn. Change. Try again. Become more of the person you want to be.
But leave a little room in your life for things that aren't trying to become anything.
For mornings that don't need a routine.
For hobbies that don't need a purpose.
For conversations that go nowhere.
For flowers you grow simply because you like seeing them outside your window.
For moments you don't document.
For days when nothing remarkable happens.
Because perhaps a meaningful life isn't created only through the things we accomplish.
Perhaps it is also created through all those small, seemingly unimportant moments when we stop trying to improve our lives…
and simply allow ourselves to live them.
Some things are allowed to exist in your life simply because they bring you joy.
With love,
